  12. ---------------------------- 1. INTRODUCTION ---------------------------------

  15. UDEL (the Ultimate DELete command) will be a component of UTOOLS (the Ultimate
  16. TOOLS) which will contain the following four tools :
  17.  
  18. UCD    Intelligent directory change that works between disks/drives and
  19.        whithout having to give a complete path.
  20. UCOPY  File and/or directory copy with several selection options. When the des-
  21.        tination disk is a floppy diskette,  UCOPY is able to split files on
  22.        several diskettes if necessary and may restore only designated files.
  23. UDEL   Files/Directories deletion with numerous options (see below). Note that
  24.        without any option, UDEL works like the DEL command.
  25. UDIR   File list with numerous selection options (date, size, type, ...) and
  26.        usable as a more powerful WHEREIS.

  39. UDEL is distributed as shareware, meaning that if you've downloaded it from a
  40. bulletin board or obtained it from a friend, you can try it out before you
  41. decide to keep it or not.  Like all shareware, if you decide to
  42. keep UDEL, you must pay a registration fee.
  43.  
  44. UDEL is a copyrighted program protected by both international and U.S. copy-
  45. right law.  If you obtained UDEL from an on-line computer service or bulletin
  46. board, a friend or colleague, or another similar source, you have an unregis-
  47. tered (trial) copy.  You are authorized to use this copy without charge for a
  48. limited period of time (One month).  When this time is up, you have to register
  49. and pay for UDEL to keep  the use of it.

  51. You may freely give your copy of UDEL but without discarding or modifying any
  52. of the files in the package which MUST contain :

  66. $20 (or 120 FF).

  80. Why this extremely modest name for Ultimate Tools ?
  81.  
  82. First, we wanted to call them YADEL (Yet Another DELete command), YADIR, YACOPY
  83. and YACD (As you can see, these names are a little bit less pretentious).
  84. But these names are too long to be efficiently and rapidly typed. And the key-
  85. board layout is not adapted to a fast typing of the three consecutive letters
  86. Y, A and D.
  87. Besides, we didn't really like the name YATOOLS for the complete package.
  88. That's why, after a long time of reflexion (at least 2 seconds), we humbly
  89. decided to call our tools the 'Ultimate' tools, because we did not see so
  90. powerful tools on the freeware or shareware market until now and the equivalent
  91. is far not ready to be available. ;-)

  121. --------------------------- 2. HOW TO USE UDEL ? -----------------------------

  124. What is UDEL ?
  125.  
  126. UDEL allow you to select and delete files AND directories across disks or
  127. partitions if desired, all in one command.
  128. Several file specifications are allowed on the same command line.
  129. Several options allow you to select with precision which files to delete.
  130. UDEL may also list the only selected files, like a more powerful WHERE.
  131.  
  132.                    This command may be EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. As an example, when
  133.  +------------+    no default option is defined, the command UDEL /R /X \*.*
  134.  ▌ BE CAREFUL ▌    deletes ALL files AND ALL directories on ALL mounted disks
  135.  +------------+    or drives without asking for confirmation (incredible,
  136.                    isn't it ? Yes, but fast and efficient ! I hope you have a
  137.                    recent backup)

  139. UDEL Syntax :
  140.  
  141.       UDEL [[-|/<Options> [<Parameters>]] [<File Spec.>] ...] ...
  142.  
  143. Options must always be preceded by a '-' or '/' sign. Those which are not
  144. followed by a parameter may be combined (/ABC, for example).
  145. Some options have to be followed by one parameter (date or file name). In that
  146. case, the following parameter in the command line is supposed to be the awaited
  147. parameter.
  148. Most options act like a toggle : If a default option is defined (See UDEL /I),
  149. the same option in the command line toggles the corresponding default option ;
  150. Every occurence of the option on the command line toggles the previous state of
  151. the option.
  152.  
  153. Note that UDEL without any option and with only one file spec acts like the
  154. DOS 3.x or 4.x DEL command.

  156. Available options :

  158. - *NW* stands for : Feature not available in the Windows version -
  159.  
  160. /?  Help in english or french, depending on the default language
  161. /A  [A]ide (Help in french) (*NW*).
  162. /C  [C]onfirm before each deletion of a file or a directory
  163. /D  Confirm only before each deletion of a [D]irectory
  164. /F  The list of files to be deleted is in the following [F]ile name (*NW*).
  165. /H  [H]elp (Help in english !)
  166. /K  [K]eepDir - Do not delete directories, only files
  167. /I  [I]nstall default options
  168. /L  Only [L]ist files and directories without deleting them
  169. /N  [N]ewer - Delete only files which have been modified since the following
  170.     date (MMDDYY if language is english, DDMMYY if french)
  171. /O  [O]lder - Delete only files which have not been modified since the follo-
  172.     wing date
  173. /P  [P]aginate the list of files (if /L or /V option) (*NW*)
  174. /R  [R]ecursevely delete files in sub-directories of the current or designated
  175.     directory
  176. /S  Delete also [S]pecial files (invisible, system or read-only)
  177. /V  [V]erbose - List all deleted files and directories.
  178. /X  Repeat deletion across [X] all available disks, drives or partitions.
  179. /Z  [Z]ero - Rewrite file with zeroes before deletion. This action prevent the
  180.     undelete function of some popular tools like PCTOOLS(tm).
  181. /1  Delete Recursiveley but only from the first [1] level of the current tree
  182.     (see below for more explanations).

  187. ------------------------------ 3. EXAMPLES -----------------------------------

  190. Explanations for these examples are given supposing that no default option
  191. is installed with the UDEL /I command.
  192.

  194. UDEL *.BAK
  195. Deletes all the .BAK files in the current directory.
  196.  
  197. UDEL /R *.BAK
  198. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in the current directory and all
  199. sub-directories of the current directory.
  200.  
  201. UDEL /R \*.BAK
  202. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in the current drive/disk.
  203.  
  204. UDEL /R /X \*.BAK
  205. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in all directories of all the mounted
  206. disks/drives.

  208. UDEL /R /X D:\*.BAK
  209. Deletes all the .BAK files and directories in the D: disk/drive (note that
  210. the unit specification D: supersedes the /X option).
  211.  
  212. UDEL -RXL *.BAK
  213. Lists all the .BAK files in all the mounted disks/drives without deleting
  214. them.
  215.  
  216. UDEL -RV -O 072290 *.BAK *.OLD *.SAV
  217. Deletes and lists all the .BAK, .OLD and .SAV files in the current directory
  218. and in all the sub-directories if they don't have been modified since 07/22/90
  219.  
  220. UDEL /RV \*.BAK /R \*.OLD /RV \*.SAV
  221. 1. Deletes and lists all the .BAK files in the current disk/drive
  222. 2. Deletes and lists all the .OLD files in the root directory of the current
  223.    disk/drive (note that the second /R option toggles the first one)
  224. 3. Deletes and does not list all the .SAV files in the current disk/drive
  225.    (note that the third /R option toggles the second one and the second /V
  226.    option toggle the first one)

  228. UDEL -RV -F LIST.DEL
  229. Recursively deletes and lists all the files and directories which specifications
  230. are found in the text file LIST.DEL (This file must be a text file with only
  231. one file specification on each line).

  234. IMPORTANT NOTE :
  235. --------------
  236.  
  237. With the /R option, if \AAA\BBB and \AAA\CCC\BBB subdirectories are present in
  238. the current drive (same BBB name, but not at the same level in the tree), the
  239. following commands :
  240.  
  241.     'UDEL /R \AAA\BBB' or
  242.     'UDEL /R BBB' if the current directory is \AAA
  243.  
  244. will delete both BBB subdirectories in the tree because all subdirectories of
  245. AAA will be scanned, not only the \AAA\BBB one.
  246. This may be annoying if not wanted.
  247.  
  248. The /1 option (which works with the /R option) tells UDEL to scan only from
  249. the first level of subdirectories.
  250.  
  251. The command :

  253.     'UDEL /R /1 \AAA\BBB'
  254.  
  255. will destroy the complete sub-tree under \AAA\BBB (BBB included), but NOT other
  256. BBB subdirectories.

  259. --------------------------- 4. DEFAULT OPTIONS -------------------------------
  260.

  262. The UDEL /I command allow you to define some default options, that is to say
  263. options it is not necessary to repeat in the UDEL command line each time you
  264. use it.
  265. These default options are saved in the UDEL.CFG file which is in the same
  266. directory as UDEL.EXE.
  267.  
  268. Available default options are :
  269.  
  270. /R  Recursive mode
  271. /V  Verbose mode
  272. /C  Confirm each file/directory deletion
  273. /D  Confirm only each directory deletion
  274. /K  Do not delete directories, only files
  275. /Z  Rewrite files with zeroes before deleting
  276. /S  Delete invisible and read-only files
  277. /X  Delete across mounted disks/drives
  278. /P  Paginate list of files/directories (if /V or /L option)
  279. /L  Only list files without deletion
  280. /1  Delete recursively from the first level only
  281.  
  282. Besides, you can possibly indicate which language to use for UDEL messages and
  283. UDEL help (english or french - sorry, the english version is not a very good
  284. one and there is no german or spanish version available !) and which default
  285. answer must UDEL propose in case of confirmation.

  287. IMPORTANT NOTE :
  288. --------------
  289.         When default options are installed, you must NOT repeat them on the
  290.         command line (remember that an option toggles the state of the last
  291.         same option). In fact, you must use the option if you do want to
  292.         toggle it.

  294. In verbose mode, default options are repeted embedded in '[]' characters on the
  295. first line of the screen.

  297. Example :
  298. IF the /L option is a default one, if you really want to delete a file, you
  299. must use a UDEL /L command to toggle the /L default option.

  305. And now the bad news :
  306. UDEL is NOT able to delete read-only directories. Sorry !
